For 2008-2009
We’re offering Green Schools Programs
Free Presentations

(assemblies and classrooms presentations)
for All Kansas Schools

The goal of the Kansas Green Schools Program is to provide opportunities for preK-12 schools to increase awareness and understanding of the complex environmental interrelationships that impact public health and the environment, and promote environmental stewardship practices that relate to air quality, climate change, solid waste reduction and recycling, water management, and outdoor wildlife habitat.

Background

The Solid Waste Bureau of Kansas Department of Health and Environment hires Stan to provide his exciting programs free to schools all over the state. This year (’08-‘09) is the eleventh year of his contract. As of June 2008, he had visited 112,877 Students and 752 schools. Stan has been all over Kansas with his program. Here is a list of all the schools he's been to in the last ten years.

In-School Programs

For Lower Elementary Schools

We recommend dividing elementary schools into two groups in order to be more age appropriate. The younger students program is usually for K-2 grades and lasts about 30 minutes. It’s full of songs and interaction.

Upper Elementary

For the older students we provide a 45-50 minute program built around conservation, changing habits and behaviors, new ideas and teamwork. There are four songs especially written for this year’s program. We are also able to offer smaller classroom presentations should all-school assemblies difficult to schedule.

For Middle and High schools

We provide classroom presentations usually to science classes. Often times we will stay all day to reach as many students as possible. We use a PowerPoint program, two songs and a discussion format. He’ll feature a short video, examples from other school’s efforts to “green” their schools and discuss your student’s ideas for projects. Groups of students from multiple classes often gather in a large classroom or a library venue for the presentation. Stan uses his years of experience as a junior high and high school teacher to good advantage in meeting the interests and “attitude” of today’s young people.

Green Advisory Meeting

While Stan is on-site he is available for a meeting with key players at the school to discuss how the school might go green. Participants can include teachers, student leaders, maintenance, cafeteria and other staff, parents, school board members and other interested parties. These meetings must be requested and scheduled in advance. They are only available in conjunction with Stan’s visit to provide a program to the students.

Materials Package

For Elementary schools we send an Advance CD with 4 lively songs that we’ll perform live at the assembly. The CD includes the songs repeated without Stan’s vocal track (karaoke) so that the school may use the CD as accompaniment while using the songs for a performance. Also included are lyrics, hand motions, study guides, a poster, a links page of resources and pre-event posters. Secondary schools will receive information about resources for the greening process.

In addition each student will receive a bookmark (pending availability) with the Get Caught Recycling logo and Stan’s picture along with the 4-R’s of waste reduction.
